Representatives of various Houston engineering organizations have selected Mr. Edwin C. Friedrichs, P.E., LEED AP, as the 2009 Houston Area “Engineer of the Year.” The selection of Mr. Friedrichs is a result of his distinguished record of service to his profession, contributions to numerous technical and professional societies, and long-standing involvement in civic and humanitarian activities. Mr. Friedrichs will be honored during the nationwide celebration of Engineers’ Week on Thursday, February 19, 2009.
A licensed professional engineer in Texas, Mr. Friedrichs has been with Walter P Moore since 1977 and has led its Infrastructure Division in the expansion of services and growing national portfolio. He is recognized by his peers as an expert in transportation planning and complex site development. He shares this expertise by serving on various local, state, and national committees and in board positions with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
He devises engineering solutions to help build better communities. Some of his signature projects include the Uptown Houston Transportation Master Plan and Streetscape Improvements Program, numerous roadways and facilities at the Texas Medical Center, Sam Houston Tollway Section VII-A, Minute Maid Park, Lake Texana State Park, BMC Software Headquarters, and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Mr. Friedrichs works to find consensus, both in his professional work and his civic activities, with groups such as South Main Alliance, Rice Design Alliance, Greater Houston Partnership, Houston Achievement Place, and various City of Houston committees.
He is a recipient of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Northwest Houston Chapter Young Engineer of the Year Award, the Patrice Johnson Distinguished Alumnus Award from Leadership Houston, the American Society of Civil Engineers Edmund Friedman Young Engineer of the Year Award, and the Service to People Award from the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
